奇幻马戏团的帕那索斯博士在很早很早以前曾和魔鬼尼克打过一个赌，赢了魔鬼，并获得永生。许多个世纪过去了，帕那索斯博士爱上了一个女人，他为了能和她在一起又和魔鬼尼克做了一笔交易，用永生换取了青春，但魔鬼提出了一个条件：帕那索斯博士生的第一个孩子，不管是男是女，只要年满16岁，魔鬼尼克就会把他（她）永远带走。
帕那索斯博士生的第一个孩子（也是唯一一个）是个女孩，叫瓦伦蒂娜，她即将年满16岁，眼看着魔鬼所说的期限就要到来，帕那索斯博士心急如焚，于是他又和魔鬼尼克达成了新的协议：双方进行一场竞赛，谁先引诱到5个灵魂，谁就得到（或保留）瓦伦蒂娜。为战胜魔鬼，帕那索斯博士代女儿征婚，许诺不管是谁只要能帮他赢得这场博弈，他就把女儿嫁给他。于是，就有了男主角年轻人“托尼”（希斯·莱杰）的登场。。A group of students who are participating in a university's summer science camp are drawn into an incredible quagmire of conflicts, ranging from the relatively simple conflict between an engaging and forthright young teacher and his older manipulative colleague, to a contest pitting political correctness against free scientific inquiry. Despite the murkiness of some of the issues in the latter conflict, the students pitch in enthusiastically on what they believe to be the side of righteousness, and passions rise to fever pitch.
